A practical exercise bike (upright bike, magnetic resistance, foldable) for convenient home workouts.
The resistance system is a key difference between exercise bikes. The two main types - magnetic and friction - feel and behave quite differently. Here's how to choose.
Magnetic resistance uses magnets positioned near the flywheel to create resistance without touching it. The big advantages are that it's very quiet and virtually maintenance-free - there's no pad to wear out or replace - and the resistance is smooth and easy to adjust, often in set levels. It's the most popular system for home bikes, ideal if you want to train without disturbing the household. The feel is slightly less 'road-like' than friction to some riders.
Friction resistance uses a felt or leather pad that presses against the flywheel. Its appeal is a more road-like, connected feel and often a high maximum resistance, which some serious cyclists prefer. The downsides: it's noisier, the pad wears over time and needs occasional replacing, and the resistance is usually adjusted by a knob rather than set levels. It's common on traditional spin bikes.
For most home users, magnetic resistance is the easier choice - quiet, smooth and no upkeep, perfect for flats and shared homes. Choose friction if you specifically want that road-like feel or very high resistance and don't mind the noise and occasional pad replacement. Both can give a great workout; it comes down to noise, maintenance and feel.
